The Studio
How Cengalhor Studio came to be
Cengalhor Studio opened in 2011 in a narrow shophouse on Lebuh Acheh, one of George Town's oldest streets. The name comes from the English word for a dirge — a quiet acknowledgement that every watch carries some part of a person's life with it, and that life is worth attending to carefully.
The founder, Encik Harith Norzaidi, began working with watch movements in his late twenties after spending several years repairing mechanical instruments for a heritage property in Penang Hill. The move to wristwatches came naturally, and the studio took shape around the same philosophy that had guided the earlier work: understand what you have before you decide what to do with it.
Over the years, the studio has settled into three areas: daily-wear quartz servicing, vintage movement conservation, and informational guidance on tropical climate storage. Each reflects a real need that Penang owners have brought to the bench, and each is approached with the same unhurried attention.
Our Approach
What guides the work
Honesty about what can be achieved
The studio does not take on work it cannot do well. If a piece falls outside our programme scope, we say so plainly and suggest where an owner might find the right help.
Conservation over convenience
Where original components can be preserved, they are. Replacement is a last consideration, and when it becomes necessary, period-appropriate references are sought rather than generic parts.
Plain communication throughout
Owners are kept informed at each stage. Technical terms are explained when they arise. Work does not proceed without agreement on scope and price.
Local knowledge applied
Penang's humidity, heat cycles, and seasonal changes create specific conditions for stored and worn timepieces. The studio draws on more than a decade of bench experience within this climate.
The People
Who Works at the Bench
Harith Norzaidi
Founder & Senior Watchmaker
Has worked with mechanical instruments and wristwatch movements since 2006. Leads vintage movement conservation and handles the more involved quartz assessments.
Lim Boon Yee
Bench Technician
Joined the studio in 2016 and handles the quartz daily-wear programme. Brings a methodical approach to battery assessment, module inspection, and case cleaning.
Siti Rohani
Studio Coordinator
Manages enquiries, coordinates collection and return of pieces, and ensures owners receive clear communication at each stage of their piece's time with the studio.
Standards
How the Studio Maintains Quality
Solvent and Lubricant Standards
Only calibre-appropriate lubricants are applied. The studio maintains a current stock of watch-grade cleaning solvents and follows manufacturer-aligned viscosity references for each movement type.
Multi-Position Timing Assessment
Serviced mechanical movements are timed in multiple positions before reassembly is finalised, ensuring the rate is within an acceptable range for the calibre.
Component Documentation
All components removed during conservation are retained, photographed where relevant, and returned with the piece or noted in the written report. Nothing is discarded without the owner's awareness.
Piece Security and Storage
All pieces in the studio's care are stored in individually labelled trays in a controlled-humidity cabinet. Owners are given a reference number for their piece at drop-off.
Owner Data Handling
Contact and piece details provided by owners are used only for the purposes of managing their service and are not shared with third parties. The studio complies with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
Scope Agreement in Writing
Before any work begins, the agreed scope and price are confirmed with the owner. Changes to scope during work are always discussed before proceeding, never assumed.
Watch Repair and Vintage Movement Conservation in George Town, Penang
Cengalhor Studio is a watch repair and restoration workshop based in the heritage district of George Town, Pulau Pinang. The studio's three programmes — quartz daily-wear servicing, vintage movement conservation, and climate storage guidance — address the needs of owners who want their pieces to continue working and to be cared for properly in Penang's tropical environment.
Vintage wristwatch conservation requires a different kind of attention than ordinary repair work. The studio approaches each piece as an object with a history — one where the existing materials and finishes carry meaning. Replacement decisions are made with care, and period-appropriate references are sourced wherever the movement's original character is worth preserving.
For owners in Penang and across Malaysia who wish to maintain a quartz daily-wear piece or have inherited a watch they are uncertain how to care for, Cengalhor Studio offers a straightforward, unhurried service grounded in real bench knowledge. Enquiries are welcome by phone or through the contact form on the main page.
